St Germain des
prés |
|
|
After
World War II, Saint germain des Près became synony-mous with intellectual
life centred on bars and cafés. Philosophers, writers, actors and
musicians mingled in the cellar nightspots and brasseries, where
existentialst philosophy coexisted with American jazz. The area
is now smarter that in the heyday of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone
de Beauvoir, the enigmatic singer Juliette Grécot and the new-wave
film makers (such as Godard and Truffaut) However, the writers are
still around, enjoying the pleaures of sitting in Les Deux magots,
Café de Flore and other haunts, or in the Jardins du Luxembourg,
just behind the Odeon Theatre. The 17th century buildings have survived,
but signs of change are evident in the affluent shops dealing in
antiques, books and fashion. Somehow, it has become an up-to-date
place, through which runs Boulevard Saint Germain. This thoroughfare
is the most celebrated of the left bank, and curves across three
districts from The Ile Saint Louis to the Pont de la Concorde. The
architecture is homogeneous because the Boulevard was another of
Baron Haussmann's bold strokes of 19th century urban planning.

Hotel des Canettes is situated in the very heart
of Saint Germain des Pres, one of Paris's most beautiful districts.
|
|
|
| THotel des Canettes is situated in the very heart of St-Germain des Prés, one of Paris's most beautiful districts, itself in the centre of the Latin Quarter.
With the charm of a small village and architecture dating back to 17th century, it is adored by both Parisians and tourists alike. It was in the now legendry cafes of this district, such as Le Flore, Les Deux Magots and La Brasserie Lipp, that the writers Jean-Paul Sartre, Boris Vian, Juliette Gréco would be
found mingling with the crowd who danced to the sound of be-bop right through till dawn. The large publishing houses started setting up in St Germain des Prés towards the end of the 18th century making the area a haven for book lovers.
Along with the publishers came the antique dealers and today the quarter houses a number of superb antique shops, art galleries and interior design boutiques. Walking is the best way to get around the quarter's narrow cobbled streets, so a sturdy pair of shoes are a must! There's no need to
take a packed lunch and a bottle out with you, as there are countless restaurants and cafes around the hotel, catering for every price range. Rue des Canettes is one of the prettiest streets in St Germain des Prés dating back to the 13th century, as well as being one of the liveliest too with many fine bistrots. At 11 rue des Canettes is lively cabaret-restaurant ("Georges, Le Comptoir des Canettes")
which evokes the old Village feeling as it was years ago, with its tradesmen and artisans. |
